Assignment 5-1 Weekly Analysis 5 Due May 2, 2010

Was she bullied to death?
By now we have all heard about the heart breaking story of Phoebe Prince. We first learned about her back in January, and these last couple of weeks her story has been even more popular. She was tormented on a daily basis which led to her decision that death would be the only way to stop it. It is sad that she has so much support now, but where was all that support when she needed it the most. Her friends stood by her side through it all, but now she has the support of the whole country.
We have all heard the quote that “girls can be mean” and a lot of older women said they wouldn’t want to be a teenager these days. No one seems to want to do anything until it is too late, and then they make excuses on why they didn’t do anything about it. We are quick to blame others, but when was the last time we stood up for someone who was being tormented. When was the last time we tried to stop someone else pain brought on by their peers? So many times we feel for the person, but yet we are glad it is not us.
I was lucky in high school, I had to older brothers who would do anything to protect me, and I made friends with all the right people. I live in a small town and our high school has the max of about 400 students. Though we were small in number, there were a couple of people who were tortured, and they went through hell at school. They would go to the principle and the other head people, and nothing was done. They didn’t do anything because the kids getting accused were friends of the principle’s daughter.
I family friend’s son got punched in the face a couple months ago, and the parents were told that nothing could be done until it happens again. What? Until it happens again! Let me through this out there when the kid was leaving school he threatened the witness that came forward. And they wonder why kids end up killing themselves or worse bringing a gun or something to school.
The bulling goes down to the first grade. The girl I watch was scared to go to school, because one of her classmates threatened to bring a knife to school and cut her up. The kids only got three days out of school. I think we need to take a serious look at who is running our schools.
The Phoebe Prince story is just one of many that end tragically. Many people can relate to her story of wanting to end the pain. So many kids want to end their lives because of what they go through on a daily basis. I understand that we can’t protect them from everything, but there has to be something to ease the torture they get on a daily basis.

Assignment 4-1 weekly anaylsis due April 25

The last couple of days I have noticed that many of my Facebook friends have been becoming fans/ joining a group. Any other day I would check into the group and consider doing the same, but this one is different. This group I want no part of and well I try to overlook the fact that my friends do. I do realize that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and I respect that.
The name of this group is “Dear Lord, this year you too my favorite actor, Patrick Swayzie, you took my favorite actress Farah Fawcett, you took my favorite singer Michael Jackson, I just wanted to let you know, my favorite President is Barack Obama, Amen. It may all be in fun, and meant to be funny, but some don’t find it all that funny.
I may not agree with everything the President does, but I don’t think this is the way to get that point across. I honestly believe that you shouldn’t wish death upon anyone. I do realize that there are some expectations to this rule, but not many.
The creator of this group claims that it is not a death wish, and that it is meant to be funny. But, I don’t think he or she would come out and openly admit it is a death wish on a public internet site.
I’m not going to say much more on the issue, because there really are no words. I will still be friends with the ones who joined, but I won’t be any part of this group.

Assignment 3-1 Weekly Analysis 3 due April 18

Getting more done!
Many of us know that it is hard to juggle the everyday things that need done. For me it is chemo treatments with my mom, the basic house work, and my school work. There are days that it seems that I can’t get anything accomplished and my stress level is high. I actually came across this article, while my mom was doing her chemo treatment. The magazines are out dated, but I still enjoy reading most of the articles.
The title stood out! “Get more done every day”; I knew this was something that I needed to read. Julie Morgenstern is the one that came =up with these six steps that may be able to help.
First is to uncover your real roadblocks. I know that I’m guilty of this myself; I blame other things for what is really stopping from getting my work done. There are days when I just can’t get motivated to do anything, but instead of trying to get things done, I make excuses. Second is to manage your goals. I too am guilty of over estimating what I can get done in a day’s time, and then get frustrated because I didn’t get them done. Setting limits ensures that you won’t get burned out, and setting targets you can achieve gives you the motivation to make your goals happen. Third is dividing and conquer. Writing the things that you have/want to do on a calendar can help you accomplish what you want to do. It also helps if you put a time frame down. Forth is to create office hours; this doesn’t necessarily applies to everyone. Define you break time is the fifth thing listed. Allowing only a certain amount of time for a break will help keep you from doing unproductive work. Everyone needs a break, if not you will soon be burnt out and not feel like doing anything. And last is don’t get derailed, life happens and sometimes it is hard to stay on track. Things come up that are out of our control, but choosing at least one thing to focus on and make it a priority to get done, helps us stay on task.
It seems like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. I find myself staying up until 3 or 4 in the morning trying to get stuff done, and have to be up no later than 7 the next day. I’m extremely tired most days, and I can’t seem to get things done. I will try anything just to be able to organize my life. I thought this article was neat, because it kind of relates to my everyday stresses.

Assignment 2-1 Weekly Written Anaylsis due april 11

“Ricky Martin comes out of the closet”; this has been the statement heard all over since the last part of March. Though it is no surprise to many, it still seems kind of wrong to judge him on his sexuality. The question has been asked why did he wait so long to come out, and if you read comments posted on the article by Rolling Stones; people think it’s because he isn’t on the top of the charts anymore. (Rolling Stone, 2010) I don’t think it’s fair that fair that peoples comments and judgments keep people from being true to themselves and to others. Granted he is a celebrity, but he is just a person like you and me. Why is it that “we” feel we have to judge every little thing they do?
Homosexuality is a major topic, and it is very controversial. I grew up, and still am a part of the Church of Christ. “We” are against homosexuality as a whole, but I personally don’t have a problem with it. I feel that it is a personal decision that shouldn’t have to remain silent. I also believe that everyone is entitled to be happy with who they are and how they want to live. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying homosexuality is right or wrong. I’m not in total agreement with it, but I accept it. I can’t not like someone just because they are homosexuals, and I can’t understand how people can.
It is something that has been becoming a topic that can’t be avoided much longer. It is one of those things where as long as it doesn’t affect you personally, it doesn’t have to be dealt with. I live in a very small town, where people know everything about you, and they are very judgmental of everything that happens. It’s hard for my friend to live here, because they don’t accept her, but she is not willing to leave the only place she has called home.
I think people need to quit thinking that they have the right to judge others, when they have skeletons in their closets. Everyone has something that they don’t want known, and they for sure don’t want people talking about it all the time. Its time to accept people for who they are and not for whom you want them to be.

Assignment 2-2 Icon Anaylsis

The three icons that I chose are Dale Jr., Guardian Angels, and the Pillsbury dough boy. If you watch NASCAR you probably know who Dale Jr. is. When I say guarding angels, I mean the figurines and pendants, and the like. Pillsbury dough boy is the face of the Pillsbury Company.
The reason that I think Dale Jr. is an icon is because he is perhaps the most known driver of NASCAR. Most times when you think about NASCAR you think of him. Even if you don’t like him, his name will come up whenever talking about NASCAR. I picked guardian angels because they are becoming popular again. People need to believe that there is someone watching over them, besides God. The Pillsbury dough boy is so cute and he has the cutest little laugh which draws people in.
Dale Jr. is my favorite driver of all time, and well he is held up on a pedal stool in my mind. The one that means the most to me is the guardian angel. I don’t know how many for sure that I have bought and received as gifts over the past couple of years. The pendants and figurines hold no powers, but it comforts me when I have them near. I have a necklace that I wear all the time, and whenever I’m stressed or depressed I rub my fingers over it. It doesn’t do anything expect remind me that there is more to this life than what is happening now. I can remember when I was little that I didn’t want anything other cinnamon rolls than Pillsbury or my grandmas. I loved going to the store when they had the display case that when you pushed his belly he would do his trademark laugh.

Assignment 1-4 Weekly Written Analysis 1

Cancer and Faith
Two of the most talked about topics of the today, brought together as one. I was actually at a loss of what to write about, but Cure magazine came in the mail a couple of days ago, and an article about keeping the faith during cancer treatments really interested me. It talks about different cancer patients that leaned on their faith to get them through the difficult times, and even the good times. According to the article faith is defined as “a perceived comfort derived from a connection to something to something larger than one’s self and was correlated with existing measures of religiosity.” (Latour, 2010)

All my life I attended church, and was taught to keep my faith during the difficult times. I assumed that I had a great relationship with God, and my faith was strong, but that all changed when I heard the doctor say they were 93% sure that my mom had cancer, and when they confirmed it my faith was shattered. My mom was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer, and the doctors and social workers were preparing me for the final moments. Instead of leaning on my church family, I turned to people outside the church to get me through the most difficult part of my life. I met two of the greatest people ever, who would help build my faith and my relationship with God back up, and the lowest moments didn’t seem to be as bad. It has been two years and my mom is still here, and I know that there is someone higher looking over her.

Spending six hours, three days a week, every other week for two years getting chemo treatments, you get to know each other really well. In the beginning it amazed me just how many people relied on their faith to get them through some of the darkest and scariest parts of their lives. They know that no matter what happens here on earth there is a better place awaiting them. One of my favorite people at chemo said it best when she said “if it wasn’t for my faith in God, I don’t think I could get out of bed in the morning.” Now, it doesn’t surprise me at all, I understand now how to use my faith to deal with my new reality.

A survey conducted my Cure magazine shows that 73% of cancer patients polled grew spiritually because of their cancer diagnosis. (Latour, 2010). Also the survey showed that 87% of the people had a religious or spiritual belief system when they were diagnosed. (Latour, 2010)

Assignment 1-2

I really don't know what popular culture means to me for sure. Just simply that it is what is "popular" at one point in time. Understanding popular culutre is important for the business enviornment becasue it will help make money for the company.

I chose FaceBook as my artifact. It has become very popular the last couple of years. It is a way of reconnecting with old friends, long lost relaitives, and even finding people with the same interest and beliefs. It also is a way for companies to get their products known about. Everyone has some connections to Facebook, wether they have their own account, or if they know someone who does. Sitting at chemo with my mom, it comes up in conversation atleast 10 times during her four hr treatment.
